Diabetes and Your Oral Health

November is national diabetes month; an important time to understand the effect that diabetes has on your oral health. Diabetics know the importance of a proper diet to maintain appropriate blood sugar levels. There is also a connection between diet and oral health.

When a diabetic does not eat properly, it affects his blood sugar levels. A fact some diabetics do not know is the effects this can have on oral health. One example is a dry mouth. While a dry mouth can be uncomfortable, it is also harmful to the teeth. A dry mouth can contribute to your risk of developing gingivitis and tooth decay as well as infections of the mouth. This is in part due to the fact that the presence of saliva helps to wash away harmful bacteria, and keep them from sticking to your teeth.

This is only one reason why it is essential for those suffering from diabetes to maintain a healthy diet. It is also a reminder that it is important to have dental care on a regular basis. Even if you floss and brush at home, you need to eat the right foods and be sure to schedule your regular cleaning.

The relationship between diet and oral health and National Diabetes month make this the ideal time to assess your habits. Remind yourself to follow your doctor’s instructions for the foods you should eat and the foods you should avoid. If you have not seen a dentist within six months, contact Dana Walters DDS today.

Dental Bridges Can Restore Your Smile

Dental bridges are a proven way to help those with missing teeth regain their smile, improve their ability to chew and speak, and keep other teeth from drifting. The device installed in the mouth is known as a “bridge” because it actually bridges the space left by one or more missing teeth and fills it with a prosthetic.

In creating this bridge, crowns are made for the teeth on either side of the gap, which are the anchoring teeth. A false tooth is set in between, so that the supporting teeth with the crowns will keep it in place. The false tooth, or pontic, can be created to fit using various substances, including combinations of gold and porcelain.

There are three main types of dental bridges available. The most common is the traditional bridge, which places a false tooth between two crowns that are then attached to the anchor teeth. Maryland bonded bridges use a porcelain or metal framework to support plastic or porcelain teeth. This bridge uses wings on each side to attach to the existing teeth. Cantilever bridges, which are not common, are constructed for situations where there are supporting teeth only on one side.

If you are in need of dental bridges, or would like to learn more about them, please contact Dana Walters DDS today.

CEREC Crowns

Dental crowns are commonly referred to as “tooth caps” and are used to support damaged teeth. Teeth that have become weakened due to chips, cracks, or decay, can be restored with the help of dental crowns. Traditionally, it takes two or more office visits to have the procedure done, but today state-of-the-art technology, known as CEREC single visit crowns, can provide customized dental crowns in just one office visit. There are a number of benefits associated with this technology compared to traditional crowns.

Apart from drastically decreased waiting time, the crown material is also very compatible with the human body and thus great for oral health. Sometimes traditional metal crowns are allergenic. CEREC crowns are a comfortable and precise fit and eliminate the issue of living with an uncomfortable temporary crown while you wait for a permanent one.

By getting CEREC crowns you won’t need numerous dental visits for impressions, which can save you a lot of time and money. CEREC crowns will leave you with a natural looking smile, because they are hard to distinguish from natural teeth. You will also have a durable restoration of your damaged tooth.

Your Toothbrush and Your Oral Hygiene

It’s time to get a new toothbrush, and when you’re browsing through the oral care aisle you see many different options to choose from. Any toothbrush will do, right? Wrong! One of the first mistakes that many people make with brushing originates back to the very selection of the toothbrush. Through no fault of their own, most people are uneducated in how to select the toothbrush that fits them the best. Here are some helpful things to have in mind when selecting your toothbrush.

Remember to think about the size of your mouth as you browse through toothbrush options. If you feel like your toothbrush is too large to fit into your mouth easily and comfortably, that’s a sign that the brush is too big to use comfortably, and it’s most likely too big to effectively clean your teeth as well. The main idea is that the more comfortably it fits in your mouth, and the more comfortable it feels when you hold it, the better chance that it’s the right size for you.

What about the bristles? If the toothbrush’s bristles are too stiff, it can irritate your gums. It’s typically better to opt for softer bristles. Try to find a toothbrush with bristles that are sturdy enough to remove plaque, but not so sturdy that it feels painful on the gums or your teeth.

It’s hard to know how your brush will feel before it’s out of the package, and it may take a little trial and error, but keep these thoughts in mind when it’s time to buy your next toothbrush. If the last one you purchased was comfortable to use, left your teeth feeling clean, and didn’t leave you in pain, it was probably a good fit. We’re always more than happy to help our patients in Hilliard and Upper Arlington, Ohio narrow down their toothbrush selection and offer helpful tips on general oral hygiene!
