Practicing Oral Hygiene While Wearing Braces 101

40343689_lWearing braces can take a lot of adjusting, in more ways than just getting used to how they look and feel.  People that are prescribed braces will have to make some minor adjustments in how they care for their teeth and gums. The oral hygiene routine used while wearing braces is similar to the routine that was used prior to wearing braces, however, consistency becomes an even more important practice.

Rules such as flossing in between the teeth once a day, and brushing the teeth at least twice a day will still apply while wearing braces. Individuals with braces are recommended to brush their teeth after each meal. If unable to do so, it is important to rinse the mouth out to prevent food from sticking to braces.  Even though it may seem impossible to floss with brackets and wires in the way, a floss threader or other interdental cleaning device can be used. Maintaining an appropriate oral hygiene routine is essential to avoid complications such as gingivitis, periodontitis, and decalcifications. Individuals can avoid these potential issues if they follow the oral care instructions recommended by their dentist and orthodontist.

Remember that scheduling regular cleanings is also very important for maintaining your oral health.  Braces or not, your regular teeth cleaning and exams are necessary to remove hardened plaque that home brushing cannot, and, checkups are important to prevent future dental problems.  Contact Dana Walters DDS in Hilliard and Upper Arlington, Ohio to schedule your teeth cleaning.  Dr. Walters is also more than happy to help you put together an oral hygiene regimen, and offer helpful instructions to care for your teeth while having braces.
