Oral Hygiene

One of the most important parts of good oral hygiene is brushing your teeth. To keep your mouth healthy, you should brush with a soft-bristled toothbrush for two minutes or more at least twice daily.

Both electric and manual toothbrushes work well as long as they are the right size, and the brush structure is large enough to reach all parts of the tooth.

The toothbrush or cartridge needs to be replaced when bristles become frayed or at least once every 3-4 months. Use a fluoride toothpaste approved by the American Dental Association (ADA).

It is also essential to use the proper technique when brushing the teeth. Angle the brush at approximately 45 degrees to the gums and move it in short strokes in a back and forth motion. Be sure to brush all the exposed surfaces of the teeth, including the inside of the front teeth.

With an electric toothbrush, move the brush slowly across all parts of your teeth – the top, inside and outside.

Flossing is also an essential part of an oral hygiene routine. Flossing helps to remove bacteria that the toothbrush is unable to reach. It also helps to reduce plaque and food particles from the gum line as well as between teeth.

A water flosser is also a great addition to your routine. Some studies report water flossers being more effective in reducing plaque and tartar than regular dental floss when used daily.
